Notifications
Stay informed when your digital team mates finish responding, even when you are not looking at the app.
What It Does
OpenMates has two types of notifications:
- In-app notifications – Cards that appear at the top of the app while you are using it.
- Push notifications – System-level alerts that appear in your browser or phone notification centre, even when the app is in the background.
In-App Notifications
These appear as cards inside the app with a title, icon, and message. Current notification types:
- Message completed – A digital team mate has finished responding to your message. You can reply directly from the notification card without navigating to the chat.
- Auto logout – You were logged out due to session expiration. The notification suggests enabling “Stay logged in” at your next login.
Each notification has a close button to dismiss it.
Push Notifications
Push notifications let you know about activity even when the app is in the background or minimised.
Supported Platforms
| Platform | Support |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Firefox (desktop) | Full support |
| Safari (macOS) | Full support (Safari 16+) |
| Android (Chrome, Firefox) | Full support |
| iOS Safari | Must add to home screen as a web app first |
Enabling Push Notifications
The first time you send a message, a banner appears in the chat asking if you want to enable notifications:
- Click Enable Notifications to turn them on.
- Click Not Yet to dismiss the banner for the rest of your session.
- The banner only appears once per chat and will not pester you.
You can also manage push notifications in Settings > Chat > Notifications.
Notification Categories
You can control which push notifications you receive:
| Category | What it covers | Default |
|---|---|---|
| New Messages | When a team mate finishes responding | On |
| Server Events | Connection issues, maintenance | On |
| Software Updates | New version available (admins only) | Off |
iOS Setup
On iPhone and iPad, push notifications require an extra step:
- Open the app in Safari.
- Tap the Share button and select Add to Home Screen.
- Open the app from your home screen.
- Enable notifications when prompted.
Tips
- You can reply to message notifications directly from the notification card – no need to navigate to the chat first.
- If you denied notification permission in your browser, you will need to reset it in your browser settings before OpenMates can ask again.
- Push notifications are most useful when you send a complex request and switch to another app while waiting.
